NaOCl, also known as Sodium Hypochlorite, is a crystalline solid that is air-unstable, pale green, soluble in cold water, and has a sweet scent. The commercial version also known as 15% bleach has 150g/L of chlorine that is readily available. This is roughly 13-weight percent sodium hypochlorite. In addition to being used as a bleaching agent for textiles and paper pulp, sodium hypochlorite is also utilized in medicine, as a chemical intermediate, as a disinfectant, and as an oxidizing reagent. Because the anhydrous solid is extremely unstable and prone to explosion, it is only sold as an aqueous solution. Sodium Hypochlorite is used as a germicide and topical antiinfective, for bleaching fabrics and paper pulp, in cleaning solutions, for water purification, to disinfect swimming pools, and for bleaching textiles and paper pulp.
